When considering sun (and UV) protection, it’s important to remember that even young eyes should be protected, as the world health organisation estimates that up to 80% of a person’s lifetime exposure happens before the age of 18. Exposure to excessive UV light puts the eyes at greater risk of cataracts, macular degeneration (AMD) and certain kinds of skin cancers. People with fairer skin and lighter eyes are at greatest risk, but all eyes benefit from protection.

Some things to consider are;

  • As well as choosing dark lenses for glare protection, you should check that the frames are endorsed with the CE mark, and also that they comply with the relevant British standard. All sunglasses that are on sale in the UK should have these markings, but beware those sold at festivals etc where standards may not be so tightly enforced.
  • Polarised lenses are helpful for dealing with glare, particularly when sunlight is reflecting from snow, or water, and they will also help with heat haze while driving.
  • Wrap around styles can also help to block UV light from causing damage to the external eye.

Remember that it’s not just at the height of summer that UV protection should be considered. The sun’s UV rays can be present in high enough levels to warrant protection throughout the year and in fact, some people find the glare of the sun more noticeable in winter, particularly when they are driving, as the sun is lower in the sky.
